Feng Shui
Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese technique of enhancing the aesthetics of an environment. It utilizes the laws of heavenly astronomy, the forces of earth and nature's energy, working together to bring about positive Qi to improve life.
In Feng Shui theory everything that exists is an integrated part of the whole universe. And everything that happens in the universe has a direct effect in each of us. It is an environmental science. It is based upon the analysis of the natural forces. The five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal and water), interact with the earthly directions (north, west, east, south), relating to the seasons, the geographical landmarks (mountains, rivers), and the flow of Qi or energy in between all these components. Traditional Feng Shui is matched to the specific individual's astrological chart.
Feng Shui literally translates as "wind-water" in English, which suggests good fortune, strong relationships, self confidence, creativity and good health. It is an intricate system of arranging buildings, objects and colors, which balances the energies of any given space to create harmony with nature and the flow of Qi.
In modern times we build residences, office buildings, and other structures with unusual shapes, and a lack of balance which in time will result in inner disharmony in the people living or working in those spaces. Feng Shui approaches our living spaces in the same way that holistic medicine serves the body and mind. Feng Shui treats the living spaces with individual personality, with its excesses and deficiencies, its stagnant areas, lack of nourishment and overcrowded areas (over-nourished).
The main tools used in a Feng Shui analysis are the Compass and the Ba-Gua. The Ba-Gua, an octagonal grid containing symbols, serves as an energy map of a room. Knowing the bagua of a space helps to understand the connection of specific Feng Shui areas to the space and a person's life. The Feng Shui compass is used to access information about a site or a building which will assess the problem areas. A series of remedies will then be applied to obtain a peaceful state of equilibrium.
A Feng Shui practitioner will study the geography around the building to determine where the entrance to the building will be in balance with the nature around it. Then the practitioner will study the different areas of the house and find ways in which the house can be filled with vital energy, free from stagnation and negative energies that affect the residents' health and emotions. Feng Shui will help to determine what the favorable positions of the house are, and the colors, layouts, and designs which will support us. Qi and air shall flow gently through the house promoting peace, rest, nourishment and health.
We consider the position of doors, windows, hallways, staircases, lighting, fire places, plants, water and the placement of furniture. Even the form, material and the structure of the furniture are considered. Feng Shui can be applied to a building, a garden and a desk, etc.
The Feng Shui practitioner should be an intuitive and sensitive individual who has knowledge of the science of Feng Shui and can fine-tune the balance between nature, Qi (or the energy of the environment) and people.
